Introduction
Bed-based treatment facilities provide a supportive 24-hour, substance-free environment for individuals dealing with alcohol and other substance use disorders (SUD) (CRISM, 2023). These facilities offer a range of services and treatment models tailored to the unique needs of each individual. Core offerings typically include:
Individual and Group Counselling
Life Skills Training
Peer Support Groups
Many programs also provide specialized services such as vocational training, medical and mental health care, and couples/family counseling (CRISM, 2023).
The American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) 2022 criteria guide referrals to bed-based treatment programs, highlighting several key considerations:
Individuals who have not benefited from multiple previous treatment attempts.
Those with co-occurring substance use or mental health disorders, or medical conditions.
Individuals in social environments that do not support their treatment goals.
Pregnant individuals who require more intensive care to improve pregnancy outcomes.
Key Features of Bed-Based Treatment:
Supervised, Abstinence-Based Housing: Offers a structured residential care environment with 24-hour support.
Medical Support: While medical support is available, it is typically more limited than that found in hospital-based services.
Psychosocial Interventions: Emphasis on counselling, relapse prevention, and cultural/spiritual activities.
Duration of Stay: Treatment programs generally last between 30 and 90 days, although our program extends to 120 days, tailored to client strengths and needs.
Treatment Focus:
Relapse Prevention and Abstinence: Programs provide structured support to address psychosocial and cultural needs.
Transition Support: This is ideal for individuals stepping down from hospital-based services or those needing high-intensity treatment with reduced medical and psychiatric services.
ASAM Levels of Care:
ASAM Level 3.1: Low-intensity residential care, typically providing about five hours of clinical services per week.
ASAM Level 3.5: High-intensity residential services that offer 24-hour structured care.
Our program is designed to support individuals at various stages of their recovery journey, emphasizing comprehensive care tailored to their unique needs.
